Nepal Social Business is an organisation established by the Chaudhary Group in Nepal, which together with the Lions Clubs International Foundation started a social business incubator and fund. This incubator is focussed on small social business startups from rural Nepal and is supporting those entrepreneurs through training, mentoring as well as equity investment up to USD 30.000.
In my role as COO from 2013 – 2015 I’ve developed the organisation and its activities from scratch, with the main aim how to establish a structure, which can help social business ideas in very challenging environments to grow and reach a stage of implementation. My strategies were aligned with the strategic direction of the corporate house and of course the requirements, which came through the partnership with the Lions Clubs International Foundation, which I was happy to establish soon after starting my journey with CG Nepal Social Business.
In the beginning, during the pilot projects in Jumla, i was lucky to be on the ground with Radha Paudel, who has been living and working in this area for more then 10 years now and helped tremendously to get the well required insight in local issues and provided the required links to the local organizations.
Many of my theoretical approaches on the topic of social business are from that time: I also had the pleasure of meeting Professor Mohammed Yunus and his team in Dhaka several times and have an exchange on the potential of social business.
The Yunus Center was esepially in the early days of our activities a very important source of inspriation and support, even though the social businesses we and they worked with differed by their nature. While the Yunus Center at this time focussed mainly on establishing big organization under the leadership of experienced CEOs, Nepal Social Business focussed on supporting small sized start-ups in remote regions. For one reason, that was also due to the quite different geographical settin and infrastructure of both countries.
In the beginning of 2015 I handed over my responsibilities in Nepal Social Business for the sake of having more time for my own two organizations, but have stayed active in the social impact assessment commitee whenver I was in Nepal. The evaluation guideline which is used in that committee is built upon the idea of the common good economy and the Social Business Typology.
